About Us

The Alta Historical Society is a not-for-profit organization, approved by the IRS under 501 (c) (3) guidelines. It was formally chartered in 1995 by former mayor, Bill Levitt, with a primary mission to collect and preserve valuable historical photographs, films, documents, and artifacts which are tied to Alta’s past…and to serve as a key facilitator for telling the story of Alta’s rich history in ways that will enhance the cultural awareness for the general public.

Our Mission

Underlying the general mission of the Alta Historical Society is an objective of working in collaboration with other organizations throughout the state and country having compatible objectives with regard to promoting early ski and mining history.

With this as a basis, the Alta Historical Society is especially pleased to commemorate seventy years of Alta ski history (1938-2008) and to highlight a few of the nationally recognized personalities who contributed to Alta’s status as a premier destination ski area.
